Today, acne has become a significant problem for a lot of people. Though acne itself is pretty standard and can happen to anyone, the scars it leaves behind are problematic. Acne refers to a condition in which your hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells or oil, causing the follicle walls to bulge. Acne can cause pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads. Acne is more common in teenagers than in adults, but it can affect anyone at any age.

Causes of acne:

Many factors cause acne. Factors of acne development can vary from person to person. Let us look at some of the most common causes here—

  • Excess sebum production: A yellowish and oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands on the skin’s surface is called sebum. Sebum is unique in its ability to seal in moisture and keep skin from drying out. It is also antibacterial, so it’s the body’s first line of defence against any infection. Overactivity of sebum glands can cause acne. Due to the excess production of sebum, our pores tend to get blocked. This results in acne formation. Note that excess sebum production can result from stress.
  • Hormones: In many cases, acne can result from hormonal fluctuations. Acne from hormonal imbalance is mainly seen in people during the adolescence period. But it is not only limited to this category of people; many face hormonal imbalance even after adolescence. Hormonal imbalance indicates the presence of too much or too little of certain hormones in your body. One of the leading causes of hormonal imbalance in recent times is stress. In women, hormonal imbalances can happen during menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, childbirth, etc.
  • Genetic: Acne can also be passed down to you from your parents. If any of your parents faced this issue, then there are chances that your acne is genetic. A study found that severe acne is more common in those with acne-prone parents. Also, adult acne is more common in those who had either one or both of their parents face this issue.
  • Stress: Stress, be it mental or physical, puts our body under immense pressure. Stress is a cause of various medical conditions, and acne can be one of them.
  • Nutrition: One of the leading causes of acne is diet. Excess consumption of oil-rich and junk food can accumulate oil in your body that harms your skin. On top of that, consuming sugary treats and baked goods can also cause the accumulation of toxins in your body resulting in acne.

Acne scars: what do you need to know?

Acne scars are caused by active acne inflammation in the thick layer below the epidermis, strengthening the skin. This layer is known as the dermis. Acne scars are caused by wounds trying to heal themselves. This healing process results in excess production of collagen fibres at the site where the acne was present. Most pimples heal without scarring, but that is not the case with cystic acne. This acne is more severe and likely to cause scarring in the area of the outbreak. To avoid disturbing the healing process of the acne and causing more damage, which increases the risk of scarring, it is essential to avoid popping pimples and picking them.

Prevent Acne ScarringWhat To Do?

Although there is no fool-proof way of preventing scarring caused by acne, you can at the very least reduce your chance of getting them by being more attentive to your skin and taking care of it.

First, talk to a dermatologist if you have acne-prone skin and scarring from them. You’ll be less likely to get scarring from acne if you try your best to keep the breakouts under control. If you do get acne, it is essential to treat it as soon as possible. Ask your skin specialist for tips on how to maintain clean, healthy, and hydrated skin. Proper skincare will prevent or minimize breakouts.

You can prevent acne scarring by not touching, scratching, or picking your pimples; this is by far the most effective way. It will take some self-control to avoid the temptation to pop the pimples, but you must keep in mind that acne heals independently. Moreover, if you mess with your pimples, it can cause scarring and increase damage.

Remedies to reduce acne scarring:

The most common ways to reduce pimple marks, such as using salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or niacinamide, are the best and most reliable. However, these methods can often cause side effects and are pretty costly.

Resurfacing and surgery are options, but they can be expensive and leave you with a lot of debt. Many people have turned to home remedies to treat acne scarring. This is both cost-effective as well as feasible.

  • Turmeric

Curcumin is a compound that possesses antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory properties. This compound, which is present in turmeric, reduces extra melanin production in the skin. This makes turmeric a great natural way to remove acne scars to a great extent naturally without the use of harmful chemicals. Turmeric is also known to treat discolouration and gives the skin a radiant glow. Apply equal amounts of honey along with turmeric to the skin for at least 20 minutes, then rinse it off with cold water.

  • Tea Tree oil

Tea tree oil is a miracle ingredient when it comes to reducing acne marks and treating acne-prone skin. Tea tree oil is famous for the antimicrobial properties it possesses. It cannot be applied directly to the skin as it can be highly concentrated. For best results, try mixing it with carrier oils like coconut oil, castor oil, olive oil, or any other oil of your choice and putting it in your skin’s affected area. This is one of the most effective and recommended ways of reducing acne scars from your face.

  • Black seed oil

The black seed oil or Nigella Sativa is mainly found in Western Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Black seed oil is highly effective in removing acne spots. This ingredient is packed with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-viral properties. These properties of Nigella Sativa make it an excellent remedy for the removal of stubborn acne spots. It has also proven to be effective in healing different types of wounds.

  • Lemon juice

Lemon juice is an excellent choice to reduce scarring on your skin. Lemon alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) acts as a natural bleach and helps grow cells and collagen. Cut the lemon in half, and rub it on the scar for approximately 15 minutes. You will notice an improvement in your scarring, and it will start fading over time.

Acne scars can sometimes make you doubt yourself and lower your self-esteem. Having clear skin will boost your confidence and make you love yourself. The most effective way of dealing with acne scars is preventing them; for that, you have to know what Causes Acne Scars and try to avoid doing such things.
